July 7, 2026 Cal City Car Caravan / Permit Review Hearing / Press Conference
On Tuesday July 7th, No Camps CA will put the pedal to the metal for our most important mobile protest yet: a car caravan to California City to add our voices in the battle to shut down California’s largest concentration camp. Along with resistance groups from across the state, we’ll attend a press conference and have the opportunity to provide public comment at the Site Review Hearing where the future of this illegally functioning camp – holding 2400 innocent people in inhumane conditions – will be decided.
Some context:
CA Attorney General Bonta has stated that this for-profit Detention Facility was opened “without proper permits (or) sufficient staffing or preparation for the influx of detainees that would soon fill its halls. ”Core Civic is using “incomplete and misleading information” to belatedly ask for permission to operate, and he is urging city leaders “to reject its applications because CoreCivic’s immigrant detention operations violate California City’s Municipal Code”, citing “substandard conditions” and “the President’s inhumane mass detention and deportation agenda.”
When Cal City leadership refused pro-bono legal support to use existing legislation to stop the Concentration Camp from opening, the ACLU, Delores Huertas Foundation, Dignity Not Detention and Shut Down Core Civic in Cal City Coalition sued the city for allowing CoreCivic to bypass local laws and reopen the shuttered high-security private prison to hold ICE detainees without due process. We look to hold ICE and the Federal government accountable for bypassing state and local laws, and let Mayor Hawkins and the Council members know that their actions impact FAR MORE than the local residents in California City.
